Shrub or tree, up to 4(8) m. in height, deciduous. Young branches glabrous or villous; thorns up to 1.3 cm. Leaves cuneate, not coriaceous, ± densely villous on both sides; leaf blade 1.5-3(5) × 1.6-3(5) cm, deeply lobed; with 2-3 pairs of lateral lobes; lower lobe 3-5(6) mm wide, split more than half of its length, acute, with apical teeth and with (1)2-8 small teeth on the basal margin; stipules 2-7 mm, with 3-8 pairs of teeth; petiole 6-18 mm, usually villous. Inflorescences with 6-12 flowers; pedicels 3-20 mm, generally villous; bracts 1.5-8.5 × 0.1-0.4 mm, caducous, with denticulate margin. Receptacle 3-4 mm, glabrous or villous. Sepals 1.9-3.5 × 1.5-2.2 mm, triangular, glabrous or villous. Petals 4-5.6 × 4-6.1mm. Stamens 17-22; pink-purple anthers. Styles 1, very rarely up to 3 and only in some flowers. Fruit a pome, ± globose or ovoid, 6.5-9 × 4.5-6 mm, red. Seeds 1, (very rarely up to 3 and only in some flowers).

Fruiting:

July to October.

Habitat:

Deciduous spiny thickets, undergrowth and edges of forests. In semiarid to humid bioclimate, on mesomediterranean to supramediterranean floors

Distribution:

Endemic to SE Iberian Peninsula and NW Africa, where so far it has been found up to High and Middle Atlas in Morocco towards the S, and in isolated populations in Algeria.

Conservation status:

Rare species with a small distribution area. Currently, it has not been assessed at a global level in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
