Family composed of 5 genera and about 200 species of perennial herbaceous plants and, more frequently, shrubs and trees, distributed throughout the temperate and tropical areas of almost the entire world. In North Africa it is represented by 2 genera with woody and shrubby species, Sambucus and Viburnum.
