Genus composed of about 110 herbaceous or woody species, distributed through Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands. In North Africa it is represented by 3 species, of which 2 are herbaceous (L. neuflizeana Courbon and L. urticifolia (Vahl) Sm.) and a single woody species (L. inflata), which can exceed 1 m in height, found within the study area in Egypt and Sudan.
