Maytenus Molina

Genus comprised of tropical or Mediterranean shrubs or small trees, monoecious and generally spiny, represented in North Africa by a single species, M. senegalensis. A tropical and subtropical species, which towards the N reaches the Saharan Atlas and the Hauz plains, around Marrakech. Even further N, in Mediterranean areas, there are a few isolated small populations in the sublittoral central Rif and southern Spain which have recently been named as subsp. europaea (Boiss.) Güemes & M.B. Crespo.
