Genus composed of about 13 species. They are deciduous trees from palaeotropical African and Asian areas. In North Africa it is represented by a single species, M. peregrina, typical of desert areas in the vicinity of the Red Sea, Arabian Peninsula, Syrian deserts and Mesopotamia.
