CLEOMACEAE Bercht. & J. Presl

Pequeña familia compuesta por 12 géneros y unas 260 especies que tradicionalmente habían sido incluidas en la familia Capparaceae, de las cuales se diferencian por la persistencia en el fruto de las Cleomaceae de una membrana placentaria (replo). Criterios moleculares (ADN) han relacionado recientemente más bien a Cleomaceae con las crucíferas (Brassicaceae). Son plantas generalmente herbáceas anuales, raramente leñosas perennes; generalmente de olor desagradable que aparecen en zonas áridas tropicales o subtropicales. En el N de África está representada por un único género, Cleome, integrado principalmente por especies herbáceas pero con algunas arbustivas o subarbustivas.
