PINACEAE Sprengel ex F. Rudolphi

Familia compuesta por 11 géneros y en torno a 250 especies de árboles (raramente arbustos) distribuidas principalmente por el hemisferio norte. Tiene un gran valor forestal por su resistencia a condiciones climatológicas extremas, aguantando temperaturas habituales bajo cero. Sus bosques suelen marcar el nivel superior altitudinal y latitudinal de la cubierta forestal. Algunas especies como las de los géneros Abies y Cedrus son muy importantes para evitar la erosión y los desprendimientos en las altas montañas donde viven.
