Genre comprenant environ 77 espèces de plantes herbacées bisannuelles ou vivaces, parfois très hautes et vigoureuses et à tiges pubescentes. Il s’agit d’un genre ancien présent dans le S.-O. et le centre de l’Asie, très répandu sur le pourtour méditerranéen, particulièrement abondant sur sa moitié orientale. Presque toutes ses espèces sont utilisées comme ornementales, et certaines présentent même des applications industrielles, employées pour la fabrication de pâte à papier. Dans le nord de l’Afrique une espèce authoctone apparaît, au moins partiellement ligneuse,  A. striata.
