Genre comprenant environ 480 espèces de petits arbres, arbustes et lianes, réparties dans les pays tropicaux et subtropicaux, la majorité en Afrique (où vivent un peu plus de 300 espèces), et le reste en Amérique et en Asie. Dans le N. de l’Afrique, il n’est représenté que par 1 espèce, un petit arbre ou arbuste à aire de répartition tropicale : C. aculeatum. Cependant, d’autres espèces apparaissent au fur et à mesure que l’on pénètre vers le S. au travers du Sahel, jusqu’à atteindre la forêt tropicale, comme les arbres C. adenogonium Steud. ex A.Rich. (C. ghasalense Engler & Diels., C. undulatum Engler & Diels.), C. collinum Fresen., C. gallabatense Schweinf., C. hartmannianum Schweinf. et C. molle R.Br. ex G. Don (C. lepidotum A.Rich., C. gueinzii Sond., C. splendens Engler), ainsi que la liane ligneuse C. capituliflorum Fenzl ex Schweinf.
