Genre comprenant 7 espèces à aire de répartition vaste englobant le S.-O. et la partie centrale de l’Asie, l’Afrique du N. et l’Australie. Une seule espèce en Afrique, N. retusa, propre des zones désertiques et subdésertiques. Les membres de ce genre sont des arbustes halophiles de 0,5-2 m de haut, à feuilles entières, alternes et plus ou moins succulentes.
