Género compuesto por unas 77 especies de hierbas bienales o perennes, a veces muy altas y vigorosas con tallos pubescentes. Se trata de un género antiguo presente en el SO y centro de Asia, muy extendido por el entorno del Mediterráneo, donde abunda sobre todo en su mitad oriental. Casi todas sus especies tienen uso ornamental, incluso algunas tienen una aplicación industrial, utilizándose para la producción de pasta de papel. En el norte de África aparece una especie al menos parcialmente leñosa, A. striata.
