Colutea L.

Género integrado por 25 especies distribuidas principalmente en la región mediterránea (S de Europa, N de África, O y centro de Asia), que está representado en el N de África por 2 especies. Todas tienen hojas imparipinnadas, flores con estandarte orbicular con dos conspicuas protuberancias en la base y legumbres infladas, membranoso-papiráceas e indehiscentes que, al agitarlas, las semillas de su interior hacen ruido como si fuesen sonajeros.

Según The Plant List, C. istria (endemismo del Sinaí) es un nombre mal aplicado de C. abyssinica pero aquí seguiremos al monógrafo polaco Kasimierz Browicz (1963) que las diferencia con claridad (de 2 subsecciones diferentes) y coincidimos con la opinión de Loutfy Boulos (Flora of Egypt) y Avinoam Danin (Flora of Israel online).
