Género compuesto por unas 480 especies de pequeños árboles, arbustos y lianas, distribuidos por los paises tropicales y subtropicales, principalmente de África (donde viven algo más de 300 especies), y el resto en América y Asia. En el N de África presenta una sola especie, un pequeño árbol o arbusto de distribución tropical: C. aculeatum, aunque, a medida que se desciende hacia el S por el Sahel y hasta llegar a la selva tropical, va apareciendo un mayor número de especies como los árboles C. adenogonium Steud. ex A.Rich. (C. ghasalense Engler & Diels., C. undulatum Engler & Diels.), C. collinum Fresen., C. gallabatense Schweinf., C. hartmannianum Schweinf. y C. molle R.Br. ex G. Don (C. lepidotum A. Rich., C. gueinzii Sond., C. splendens Engler), así como la liana leñosa C. capituliflorum Fenzl ex Schweinf.
