Género compuesto por unas 53 especies tropicales de África y Asia. Son árboles, arbustos, y plantas trepadoras con hojas alternas o agrupadas, simples (en el N de África) o trifoliadas. Flores actinomofas en racimos o glomérulos, 3-4 sépalos libres y pétalos en nº variable (0-4). Estambres soldados y ginóforo que excede los estambres. Dos especies en el N de África, M. crassifolia, y M. oblongifolia, de distribución saharo-tropical.
