Género que cuenta con 7 especies con una amplia distribución incluyendo el SO y parte central de Asia, África del N y Australia. Sólo una especie en África, N. retusa, propia de zonas desérticas y subdesérticas. Los miembros de este género son arbustos halófilos de 0,5-2 m de altura, con hojas enteras, alternas y más o menos suculentas.
